Shift Supervisor - Rolling Mill

Description of the Job

Under the direction of the Rolling Mill Superintendent, this position is primarily accountable for a shift crew tasked with the production of hot rolled steel bars.  The incumbent is responsible for ensuring employee and equipment safety, productivity targets, quality standards and customer specifications are met. 

 

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Responsible for providing and maintaining a safe work environment for employees and assuring enforcement of safety practices and regulations.
  • Oversee and supervise a shift to ensure safe and reliable operation of plant production equipment.
  • Ensure that all employees work in accordance with all Company policies and procedures and documents.
  • Ensure throughout the shift that proper methods and procedures are being followed and that quality, safety, environment standards are being met.
  • Promote teamwork and good employee relations, through training, evaluations and feedback, and consistent application of the collective agreement.
  • Work in collaboration with the Operations team and other departments (Maintenance, Warehouse, etc.)
  • Prepare and submit daily shift reports on Safety, Production, and overall shift performance.
  • Departmental housekeeping – promote and actively develop 5S methodology.
  • Lead team activities to improve goals.
  • Ensure all environmental practices and guidelines are followed.
  • Assist Department Manager to develop a safety and environmentally conscious team by ensuring team and safety meetings are held regularly and overall safety performance is assessed and reviewed during monthly crew meetings.
  • Conduct accident and incident investigations and complete required forms to determine the root cause to prevent future reoccurrences.

 

Requirements

The ideal candidate for this position will possess:

  • A minimum of 5 years of production supervision experience in a unionized environment
  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Steel industry or heavy manufacturing experience
  • Strong organizational and leadership skills, together with a results-driven approach
  • Good technical and troubleshooting skills
  • Self-motivation and an efficient problem-solver
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • SAP and Kronos experience (an asset)
  • Ability to work rotating shift is a must.
