BASIC FUNCTION:

The Process Engineer II provides technical coordination and support in the Scrap, Melting, Refining, Refractories, Casting, Rolling, Finishing and Heat Treatment processes by overseeing process, practice and equipment monitoring, stabilization and improvements through;

     a) Developing and refining of operating procedures.

     b) Processing sample and data collection and interpretation.

     c) Implementation of new technology.

     d) Technical training and development of operations personnel.

     e) Supporting process improvement and optimization.

     f) Technical Studies to support CAPEX investments.

     g) Implementing Best Practices.

     h) Developing and executing Annual Action Plans.

     i) Participating in Technical Committees and benchmarking.

 

NATURE AND SCOPE:

This position is primarily responsible for developing, refining, and communicating the strategies and operating information needed to optimize productivity while ensuring the efficient and cost effective production of the final product. The Process Engineer II shall prepare and/or review all data sheets, diagrams, and flow charts needed for the correct and efficient operation of equipment. This will include the need to collect, interpret and extrapolate data from the production process in order to monitor current performance against established practices and make recommendations on how to improve efficiencies for the future. The incumbent must work in close cooperation with department supervisors and appropriate maintenance and operations personnel to ensure correct and proper operation of all related equipment to obtain the desired production, safety, and quality levels as needed. The Process Engineer II is responsible for developing engineering information to facilitate departmental requests and needs for cost justification.

 

Qualifications for this position include a four year college degree in Engineering or Material Science combined with 3 to 5 years of industrial experience. The incumbent should have a basic knowledge of metallurgy and an understanding of steel manufacturing techniques used in the melting, refining, and casting of molten steel or modern rolling practices. The successful candidate must be able to apply engineering fundamentals to the continuous improvement efforts of production and maximize the efficiency of the overall department operation.

 

This position reports directly to a senior member of the Process Engineering team, typically a Process Engineer IV or Process Engineer V for assignments. The incumbent will be responsible for the oversight, contribution to, and support of all the trainings and development activities for employees of the location. The Process Engineer II is required to actively participate in the technical development of lower level Process Engineers and G-Future Program participants. The incumbent must possess good communication skills, have the ability to articulate ideas, be detail oriented, and be comfortable dealing with associates at all levels within the organization.

 

The Process Engineer II will assist in the preparation and completion of blue prints for additions, installations, maintenance and repair purposes. This job is responsible for preparing drawings and sketches for modifications of machinery and equipment, and layouts on various systems. On large projects, works from design drawings, preparing necessary drawings to construct facilities. The incumbent assists in checking and verifying specifications and drawings for accuracy. Must stay abreast of current rolling and melting technologies to assist with recommending changes to effect continual improvement in the production process.

 

The incumbent must perform the above mentioned duties and responsibilities in accordance with all Federal, State, and Local environmental regulations. Employees must also report any situation which may have a detrimental impact to human health or the environment to their immediate supervisor.

 

PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES:

     1. Work individually and in teams on process, practice, and equipment related projects at the location.

     2. Collect, correlate and report operational information and data for their assigned location.

     3. Prepare data sheets, diagrams, and flow charts for correct and efficient operation of the equipment.

     4. Provide preliminary engineering services for department projects and cost justification.

     5. Assist with preparing programs for the computer control systems.

     6. Review, develop, and improve operation procedures and train plant personnel and contractors in operational improvements.

     7. Coordinate with supervision during routine operations, and assist in solving production anomalies in the operations process.

     8. Assist with and participate in the process team building efforts through participation in improvement activities.

     9. Participate in the training and development operational supervision and hourly employees.

   10. Attend required training courses for technical and career development and actively participate in the Knowledge Management Community.
