BASIC FUNCTION:

 

Responsible for the accounting function for the Wilton Steel Mill division, including inventories, budgets, forecasts, capital expenditures and divisional financial record keeping.  Coordinate and provide in-house financial guidance to divisional staff and management. 

 

NATURE AND SCOPE:

 

This position’s responsibilities pertain primarily to the accuracy of the mill’s financial records and operational costs.  The incumbent will be involved in monthly analysis of expenditures for the division and assist the Mill Vice President / General Manager in the identification of problem areas such as maintenance cost, capital expenditures and consumable inventories.  This position is a senior level leadership position which reports directly to the Vice President / General Manager. 

 

The incumbent will be responsible and held accountable for the accounting and office functions in the Wilton Steel Mill including: assure accuracy of production and ending inventories; determine validity of usage of raw materials and other variable costs; assure accuracy and reasonableness of all other costs for inclusion in and the preparation of the division cost statement; review all statements with division management explaining variances and making sure all managers have an understanding; compile and coordinate all data for inclusion in business plans; develop division budgets and standards, quarterly forecast of production tons and variances, and mill studies.  These mill studies to include the investment analysis, cost impact of various levels of production (incremental cost), efficiency of smooth office operations, and other special projects as assigned by the Vice President / General Manager.  Physical inventories will be coordinated, observed, analyzed and communicated to the corporate office on a timely basis.

 

The incumbent is responsible for all division financial record keeping and an effective dialogue with the general accountant in the corporate office.  Major challenges for the incumbent are:  1) to stay abreast of cost accounting practices, 2) operate office in efficient manner to meet schedules, and 3) better assist divisional management in measuring economic performance and recommend changes to improve profitability and cost savings.  Responsible for the accuracy of cost and compilations; issue performance reports for all plant operations involving production data such as: production rates, lost time, down time, maintenance cost (actual vs budget), man hours per ton, inventory of scrap record keeping and other consumable variables.  Incumbent will also monitor hazardous materials record keeping for compliance with government regulations and has supervisor responsibilities of employee selection, evaluation, training and discipline up to and including discharge.

 

PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES:

 

  •  Responsible for hiring, training, evaluating the assigned staff, recommending and administering discipline.

 

  •  Direct personnel in the preparation of divisional financial data for submission to the division and corporation on a timely basis.

 

  •  Responsible for the overall accuracy and timely reports pertaining to payroll,  inventories, production, shipping, purchasing and payable.

 

  • Maintain effective liaison with the division personnel, corporate general accounting, and tax departments, auditors, vendors, and executive corporate management.

 

  • Carry out and administer Corporate programs and policies relative to areas of responsibility.

 

  • Responsible for the development, analysis and interpretation of statistical and accounting information to appraise operating results in terms of costs, budget inventories, and policies of operation.

 

  •  Account for the fixed assets with the assistance of the tax department.

 

  • Carry out or participate in assigned projects such as capital expenditures on new facilities, product lines, or when in need to assist Corporate Accounting personnel in various projects.

 

The incumbent must perform the above mentioned duties and responsibilities in accordance with all Federal, State, and Local environmental regulations.  Employees must also report any situation which may have a detrimental impact to human health or the environment to their immediate supervisor.

 

REQUIREMENTS:

 

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance or related degree

 

  • 4-6 years of practical experience in cost and general accounting, budgeting and forecasting, and applicable data processing functions

 

  • Previous supervisory experience
