Position Summary

The Electrical Supervisor is responsible for leading and supervising electrical maintenance activities within a steel manufacturing environment. This position provides frontline leadership to electrical maintenance employees and ensures that work is performed safely, efficiently, and in accordance with established maintenance, production, environmental, and quality standards.

The Electrical Supervisor is responsible for planning, coordinating, and prioritizing electrical maintenance activities to maximize equipment reliability and availability while supporting safe and efficient steel mill operations. The position works closely with Operations, Mechanical Maintenance, Engineering, Reliability, and other support functions to identify and resolve equipment issues and drive continuous improvement.

Responsibilities/Safety Leadership

• Demonstrate and promote a strong commitment to safety and environmental stewardship.
• Ensure all electrical maintenance activities are performed in compliance with company safety policies, procedures, and applicable regulatory requirements.
• Lead and participate in safety meetings, job safety analyses, and workplace inspections.
• Ensure proper application of Lockout/Tagout (LOTO), electrical safe work practices, arc flash requirements, and other energy-control procedures.
• Identify unsafe conditions and behaviors and take appropriate corrective action.
• Promote a culture in which employees actively participate in hazard identification and risk reduction.

• Supervision and Leadership
• Provide direct supervision, leadership, coaching, and support to electrical maintenance employees.
• Assign daily work and coordinate manpower to support planned maintenance, corrective maintenance, and production requirements.
• Monitor work quality, productivity, attendance, and adherence to established procedures.
• Develop employee skills through coaching, mentoring, training, and performance feedback.
• Support employee development and progression within the electrical maintenance organization.
• Promote effective communication and collaboration between maintenance personnel, operations, engineering, and management.
• Administer applicable policies, procedures, and labor agreements in a fair and consistent manner.

Maintenance and Reliability

• Coordinate preventive, predictive, corrective, and emergency electrical maintenance activities.
• Ensure maintenance work is properly planned, scheduled, and executed to minimize equipment downtime.
• Work closely with Maintenance Planning and Reliability personnel to improve equipment reliability and maintenance effectiveness.
• Review equipment failures and recurring problems and participate in root cause analysis and corrective action development.
• Identify opportunities to improve maintenance procedures, equipment reliability, and electrical system performance.
• Support the development and execution of shutdown, outage, and major maintenance work.

Technical Responsibilities

Provide leadership and technical support for the maintenance and troubleshooting of industrial electrical and automation systems, including:

• Medium- and low-voltage electrical distribution systems.
• Motors, motor controls, and motor control centers (MCCs).
• Variable frequency drives (VFDs) and DC drives.
• Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs).
• Human Machine Interfaces (HMIs) and industrial control systems.
• Instrumentation and process control equipment.
• Industrial communication networks.
• Cranes and material handling equipment.
• Furnaces, rolling mills, casting equipment, and other steel manufacturing equipment.
• Transformers, switchgear, breakers, and protective devices.
• Assist employees with complex troubleshooting and technical problem-solving.
• Ensure electrical drawings, documentation, and maintenance records are maintained and updated as appropriate.
• Support electrical projects, equipment upgrades, and capital improvements.

Planning and Coordination

• Coordinate daily maintenance priorities with Operations and other maintenance departments.
• Review work orders and ensure appropriate labor, materials, tools, and equipment are available.
• Participate in daily production and maintenance planning meetings.
• Manage maintenance priorities during equipment breakdowns and emergency situations.
• Coordinate contractor activities when required and ensure contractors comply with site safety and work requirements.
• Support inventory and spare parts strategies for critical electrical equipment.

• Continuous Improvement

• Promote continuous improvement in safety, quality, cost, and productivity.
• Utilize maintenance and operational data to identify improvement opportunities.
• Participate in reliability initiatives, root cause investigations, and problem-solving activities.
• Support the implementation of new technologies and maintenance best practices.
• Identify opportunities to reduce downtime, improve equipment availability, and increase maintenance efficiency.

Qualifications

Required:

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Significant experience in industrial electrical maintenance.
• Demonstrated experience troubleshooting and maintaining industrial electrical and control systems.
• Strong knowledge of electrical safety practices, including Lockout/Tagout and arc flash awareness.
• Ability to read and interpret electrical schematics, one-line diagrams, control drawings, and technical documentation.
• Demonstrated leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills.
• Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, heavy industrial environment.

Preferred:

• Associate degree or technical degree in Electrical Technology, Industrial Electronics, Automation, or a related field.
• Previous supervisory or leadership experience in an industrial maintenance environment.
• Experience in the steel, metals, mining, manufacturing, or other heavy industrial industries.
• Experience with PLCs, VFDs, industrial automation, and process control systems.
• Experience with computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS).
• Journeyman Electrician certification or equivalent industrial electrical experience.

Working Conditions

This position works primarily in a steel manufacturing environment and may be exposed to:

• High temperatures and radiant heat.
• Dust, noise, and vibration.
• Moving equipment and heavy industrial machinery.
• Elevated work areas and confined spaces.
• Rotating shifts, weekends, holidays, and call-in responsibilities as required by business needs.

The Electrical Supervisor must be able to work safely in an active industrial environment and wear all required personal protective equipment.
