PRIMARY FUNCTION:  Sets up and operates all types of machine tools and performs all types of layout, fitting and assembly work.  Operates lathe, and associated equipment, for turning all types of new and used iron, steel and alloy material to finished size, contour, and surface.  Makes and repairs tools, rigs, fixtures, gauges, templates, dies, machine parts, and instrument parts.  Perform any dismantling, fitting or assembly work required for plant maintenance or construction.

 

TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT:   All types of machine tools such as lathes, shapes, planer, horizontal and vertical boning mills, milling machine, heat treating equipment, lathe, cutting tools, calipers, gauges, templates (SEE ATTACHMENT).

 

MATERIALS:   Mill equipment and parts, forgings, castings, bar stock, plates, rods, etc., iron, steel, brass, alloys and other metals.  New and used forged or cast iron or steel (SEE ATTACHMENT)

 

SOURCE OF SUPERVISION:  Perform work with a minimum of direction.

 

DIRECTION EXERCISED:   Works alone or directs other workpersons as required.

 

WORKING PROCEDURES:

Receives instruction, prints, and work order.

Interprets drawings and sketches, plans and determines working procedure.

Performs any layout work and makes sketches of parts as required.

Calculates and determines dimensions, tapers, indices and other data using shop formula and hand books as necessary.

Selects and grinds tools for the job in accordance with hardness, machinability and other properties of parts to me machined.

Procures or makes jigs, fixtures or machine attachments required for the job.

Sets up and operated machine tools, adjusting stops, feeds and speeds for efficient machining.

Machines parts to precision tolerances and specified finishes.

Uses precision measuring instruments.

Dismantles machinery and equipment.

Assembles, fits, aligns and adjusts machinery and equipment to very close tolerances.

Works in shop or field as required.

Completes reports and forms as directed.

Cements carbide cutters to holders and grinds them.

Operates crane as required for setting up machines and materials in machine shop.

Sets up and operates lathe.

Sets tools and adjusts feeds and cutting speeds in accordance with steel hardness, diameter, depth and width of cut.

Checks progress of cut with such tools as calipers, levels, protractors, gauges, templates and rules.

Uses tapes, knurling and ragging attachments.

Operate mobile equipment as required

Performs layout work including complex passes from blueprints or with templates, calculating dimensions, tapers, etc.
