Job Summary:

This is a summer student position, applicants must be enrolled in a post-secondary institution. The student labourer is an entry level position, reflecting employees with no previous knowledge or experience related to scrap metals and recycling.  The labourer must have the ability to learn and have a strong work ethic.  The labourer will assist in several aspects of daily operations such as scrap inspection, sortation, and general yard maintenance as directed. Under the safety standards of Gerdau the labourer performs general maintenance duties.  The labourer must have strong communication skills and use them at all times to ensure safety among co-workers, truck drivers, peddlers, and contractors. This is a summer position only, beginning in early May 2024 through to the end of August 2024.  Typical work week will be Monday through to Friday.

 

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Follow all of the established Gerdau safety, environmental, and routine procedures specific to the yard
  2. Assist in the daily operations and maintenance.
  3. Maintain work area in a clean and orderly fashion
  4. General house-keeping duties: sweep shop area and removal of garbage
  5. Assist co-workers in general operational duties that are essential to the yard in terms of safety, efficiency, and profitability
  6. Problem solving input and contributions as required
  7. Provide excellent customer service
  8. Promote and practice the core values of Gerdau

Qualifications and Experience:

Must be 18 years of age or older and enrolled in a post-secondary institution.
