Under the general direction of the Environmental Director, responsible for supporting and assuring compliance with the Gerdau Ameristeel Environmental Policy, monitoring and assuring compliance with federal, state, provincial, and local regulations at all Gerdau Ameristeel locations as well as at TSD facilities and other facilities used by the Company that could present environmental risks and liabilities.  Participates in trade association environmental committee. Promotes excellent community relations, environmental stewardship and continuous improvement at all Company operations. Cost effectively manages legacy and current environmental sites and issues.  Follows and communicates applicable trends and developments in the environmental field.  Oversees and resolves issues that arise during external environmental inspections and audits of Gerdau Ameristeel facilities.




The Mill Environmental Manager must keep up to date with environmental regulations and is responsible for monitoring all relevant steel mill operations and providing recommendations necessary to assure ongoing compliance with federal, state, and local environmental regulations.  The position reports to the Environmental Director .  The incumbent gives functional and developmental direction and assistance to the location and region Environmental Managers and directly manages outside attorneys, consultants and contractors.


The incumbent is responsible for developing and maintaining productive relationships with location management and with the regulatory agencies and for performing or directing regular environmental reviews at each Company location and  at off-site by-product and waste processing facilities used or planned for use by the Company. Manages environmental due diligence activities associated with Company acquisitions, leases and divestitures


The Mill Environmental Manager is responsible for obtaining and providing direction, guidance, and assistance as required to assure the most efficient and effective use of resources required for remediation activities and for short and long-term environmental compliance. 


The incumbent represents the corporation in meetings with regulatory agencies and attends hearings and presents the Company’s position as necessary. Must discreetly manage confidential and sensitive information.


The major challenge of this position is to assure ongoing environmental compliance and continuous improvement while minimizing total cost and risks to the Company.  Critically evaluates new environmental technologies,  and proposals as to their feasibility, and profitability for Gerdau Ameristeel.  Anticipates and recommends strategy for environmental regulations in ways that prevent or minimize costs and penalties. 




  1. Keep up to date with federal and state environmental regulations.
  1. Provide direction and participate as necessary in environmental compliance and remediation activities.
  1. Conduct regular environmental reviews to assure compliance at Gerdau Ameristeel locations and outside waste disposal facilities.
  1. Maintain productive relationships with mill and regulatory agency personnel.
  1. Responsible for carrying out Company environmental policy and programs.

  • Working knowledge of the applicable federal and state/provincial environmental regulations
  • At least five years of steel mill or similar heavy industrial experience in the environmental compliance, systems and remediation areas. 
  • Education and formalized work experience should be comparable to that experienced by a graduate of a four year engineering or technical college.
