This position reports directly to the Environmental Manager. Responsible for assisting in the implementation and maintenance of environmental compliance activities for the Petersburg Steel Mill based on knowledge of environmental laws, regulations and counsel of department manager, corporate environmental compliance manager, outside attorneys, and consultants.  Responsible for environmental management system, environmental training, conducting tests and analyzing results.  



This position is primarily responsible for providing guidance and assistance to division management and workforce in general with regards to pollution control, radiation control, hazardous waste, recycling efforts, and general environmental issues and to assure ongoing compliance with federal, provincial and local environmental and safety rules and regulations.


The Environmental Engineer collects samples and data required for various environmental permits and licenses.  In addition, the incumbent is also responsible for the preparation and timely filing of all federal, provincial and local environmental reports and the development and implementation of a measurement system to evaluate the overall environmental management system.


The Environmental Engineer will train and coordinate the activities of employees assigned to tend and maintain environmental equipment.  In addition, he/she assists in the planning of new or updated emissions control equipment or mill project modifications to include review of new facilities and equipment to assure compliance with all government environmental and safety rules and regulations.


The Environmental Engineer obtains and provides directions, guidance, and assistance as required to assure the most efficient and effective use of resources required for remediation activities and for short and long term environmental compliance in line with company policy and under the general direction of the Environmental Manager. 


This position is also responsible for the coordination of environmental training and is the designated management representative on the environmental management system. The specialist is also responsible for performing lead auditor functions.  It is necessary for this position to work closely with the Quality Assurance Coordinator and Health and Safety Coordinator to optimize the Business and Management Systems.


Some travel may be required in this position to perform environmental audits at other company locations, participate in meetings or conferences, or assist in other ways as necessary.


The major challenge of this position is to assist in anticipating and providing compliance with environmental regulations.



  • Keep up-to-date with federal, provincial and local environmental regulations. 
  • Participate as directed in environmental compliance and remediation activities and provide leadership in all environmental areas.
  • Assist in preparing studies, plans, specifications, response to regulatory comments, and other communications for environmental engineering projects.
  • Develops action plans and key indicators for improving environmental performance.
  • Develop and implement division’s Emergency Procedures in conjunction with the Health and Safety Coordinator.
  • Maintain division’s environmental files and reports; Responsible for record keeping for State/Federal/County and data management; Maintain environmental plans in accordance with regulatory requirements.
  • Conduct routine on-site inspections to insure compliance with federal, provincial and local environmental regulations and guidelines.
  • Monitor and maintain compliance with storm water permitting issues.
  • Performing field activities either individually or as part of a team that may include the collection of water samples, implementing environmental procedures, and over sight of related subcontractor services.
  • Represents Gerdau’s interest as required to different groups.  Assist in the preparation of State, Federal, DEQ/EPA, and local regulatory agency multimedia reporting relating to air, water and waste.
  • Responsible for developing and carrying out company policy, programs and procedures. 
  • Designated management representative for environmental management system and provides monthly update on EMS.



  • Bachelor's Degree in Environmental Engineering, Chemistry, Biology, related field, or equivalent experience
  • Specific knowledge of environmental and safety compliance regulations is required and a familiarity with steel mill or similar heavy industrial operations is preferred. 
  • Candidate should be self-motivated and able to take directions and work independently.
  • Ability to communicate and work effectively with co-workers to inform them of work-related problems, regulatory, compliance updates, and to plan, organize, and complete job tasks; has excellent presentation skills and strong computer skills.
  • Minimum three years of experience in the area of industrial environmental regulations, particularly Title V air permits, RCRA, or comparable fields.
  • Storm water quality monitoring and reporting preferred.
  • OSHA 10-Hour Construction and HAZWOPER 40-hour training preferred or ability to obtain certification within a reasonable period of time (approximately 12 months).
