Perform a limited variety of highly repetitive duties necessary to load secure steel rail spike products into railroad gondola cars, boxcars or truck trailers for shipment to customer location. On occasion, operate forklift to service production lines and to facilitate the transfer of finished product to temporary storage locations or dock loading platform and perform other material handling duties necessary to maintain efficient material transfer, loading or shipping operations.

 

  1. Work involves simple tasks, routine in nature, requiring care in performance to properly load and secure product on railcars or other specified vehicles.
  2. As required, or directed, operate fork lift to transfer finished product from production line and secure with steel banding or shrink wrap material to palletize product for shipment.
  3. Move palletized material to temporary storage inspection station, or loading dock.
  4. Receive verbal instructions from Shipper/Loader or supervisor regarding customer loading requirements, product selection and vehicle type and number.
  5. Disengage rail car mover lever to position boxcar or gondola into loading position.
  6. As directed, prepare rail car or other specified vehicle to receive product for shipment. Attach steel strapping material to boxcar interior walls in accordance with standard operating procedures and methods. Ship product palletized or loose as per customer order.
  7. Operate forklift, or hand held, push button pendant crane, with or without magnet, to load specified product into proper vehicle.
  8. Upon completion of loading process, notify supervisor to verify shipping instructions, checking customer name, vehicle number and type. Check product placement for proper positioning and secure strapping using banding machine and clincher. Check for proper strapping tension.
  9. Operate forklift or pendant crane to unload incoming steel and machine shop supplies, pallets, empty kegs, and steel banding strips. Place supply items at proper storage location. Distribute pallets to production line staging area.
  10. Check and verify steel heat and bundle numbers, weight and carbon content as indicated on shipping invoice; check off item or indicate shortages and forward to office personnel for processing.
  11. Operate forklift to empty scrap buckets and return to production line.
  12. As directed, assist on production line as relief person.
  13. Perform other duties, as assigned by Supervisor.

EDUCATION

HSD/GED required

Able to read, write, add, subtract and follow instructions.

EXPERIENCE

Over 1 month and up to 2 months.

Requires the use of some judgment to follow directions and complete shipping orders or instructions, involving the making of minor decisions such as safe operation of forklift and OVH pendant crane, hookup, lifting and placement of finished product, and adequate strapping of product within limits of standard operating procedure or methods.

PHYSICAL DEMAND

Moderate to heavy physical effort consisting of moving, rolling, stacking, and loading palletized or loose rail spike kegs. Unload incoming supplies and materials ranging from light to heavy weight (50 lbs. or less). Work often performed in difficult positions.

MENTAL OR VISUAL DEMAND

Continuous mental and visual attention to unloading and shipping processes and to the operation of crane and material movement procedures. Utilize efficient material handling methods to meet product shipping schedules and production line service requirements.

RESPONSIBILITY FOR EQUIPMENT OR PROCESS

Occasional use of forklift and pendant crane to move, load or transfer material. Probable damage to equipment or disruption to process due to careless or inattentive operation seldom over $500.

RESPONSIBILITY FOR MATERIAL OR PRODUCT

Inattention and careless operation of equipment in moving or loading product, or in strapping or palletizing materials, may cause some wastage of product. Loss seldom over $500.

RESPONSIBILITY FOR SAFETY OF OTHERS

Inattention or careless operation of material moving equipment, careless hooking or guiding material may cause lost time injury to others, such as crushed hand or foot.

RESPONSIBILITY FOR WORK OF OTHERS

Responsible only for own work.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Somewhat disagreeable working conditions. Exposed to noise, dirt, heat, and occasional outside weather conditions to the extent of being disagreeable.

HAZARDS

Injuries, should they occur, may result in lost time injury due to crushed hand of foot, loss of fingers or toes.
