The Safety Manager reports directly to the Monroe Mill Vice President General Manager.  Directly reporting to this incumbent is one Safety Specialist and Union Health and Safety Representative.


This job is responsible for assessing current loss prevention and control efforts (in the area of safety and health) and making recommendations to management for improvement.  The incumbent will assist management with the strategic development and implementation of a management accountability system aimed at preventing and controlling losses by identifying and developing role definitions for all levels of the organization; identifying, deliver training, and developing/implement communication systems to effectively communicate safety and health issues.


The incumbent evaluates risks and develops guidelines for roles, measurements, and rewards for the management system in the areas of employee safety (behaviors, conditions that lead to accidents); industrial hygiene (noise, lead exposure, hazard communication, etc.); property protection (fire suppression systems, inspection procedures, etc.); post Injury and General Claims Management (all lines); OSHA compliance (lockout/tagout, confined space entry, fall protection, OSHA record keeping, etc.); contractors; and job safety analysis. This incumbent is responsible for creating and implementing Safety Systems Procedures.


The incumbent actively participates in accident prevention activities to include inspections, observations, and incident investigations. This job acts in an advisory capacity to management and liaison with OSHA inspections and correspondence.


The incumbent should possess a bachelor’s degree in safety, industrial hygiene, engineering, or other appropriate technical discipline and 5-7 years’ safety management experience (heavy industrial manufacturing environment preferred).  Also desirable are 3-5 years’ facilitation experience in problem solving, communication, quality improvement and other typical facilitation experience.  The incumbent should also possess certifications from recognized training and development organizations to deliver their programs.  Excellent communication skills including working knowledge of Microsoft Office Professional applications are required.  Associate Safety Professional (ASP) or Certified Safety Professional (CSP) is preferred.




  1. Assist management with the development and implementation of management accountability system for safety and health initiatives.


  1. Evaluate risks and develop guidelines for management accountability system.


  1. Participate in safety inspections, observations, and incident investigations.


  1. Act as liaison with OSHA inspections and correspondence.


  1. Assists with developing skills training and operating procedures' training modules.


  1. Stay abreast of developments in industrial safety and hygiene fields.


  1. Direct day to day activities of EMT/Security staff.


  1. Support departments with implementation of Gerdau Business System Safety Initiatives.


  1. Responsible for ensuring the Cardinal Safety Rules are followed.


  1. Responsible for managing the departmental budget and meeting the EMM goals.


  1. Responsible for establishing and administering department rules for safety, discipline, and work procedures within quality and corporate management systems guidelines.


  1. Responsible for and completing all required annual environmental training (inc. fugitive dust).


  1. Employee is expected to know, understand, and follow all applicable Federal, State, and Local environmental legal requirements and practices.


  1. Enforce environmental compliance to procedures, practices and regulations within the department.


  1. Ensure environmental compliance with all applicable Federal, State, and Local regulations within the department.


  1. Responsible for spill prevention, containment, response and clean up or assist in clean up of spills.


The incumbent must be responsible for the safety of all individuals who work under his/her management, seeking continuous improvement related to employee’s health and safety, environment and the process efficiency and customer’s satisfaction with the quality of products and services.
