The Product Metallurgist is responsible assisting in determining and eliminating the root cause of non-conformances that are found at the division and/or with the customer.




This job is accountable for identifying and solving metallurgical problems. The incumbent will assist in determining and eliminating the root cause of non-conformance that are found at the Michigan Mills (Jackson and Monroe) and/or with the customer.


This job reports to the QA & Metallurgy Manager.  Reporting to the incumbent indirectly are Lab Technicians.


This job has several challenges such as combining the efforts of people, equipment and material in order to meet quality goals and standards, while controlling costs within the established guidelines.  Qualification for this job should include a four-year college degree, preferably in a metallurgical engineering or 1-3 years metallurgical experience. The incumbent should also have knowledge of grade specifications, customer, and industry specifications. This incumbent should possess basic computer literacy. This job requires the holder to have a completed Metallurgist training qualification checklist.




Responsible for identifying and solving metallurgical problems.


Perform as customer technical liaison.


Dispositions product


Obtain all metallurgic specifications.


Document customer requirements and process routing of quotes.


Coordinate & control flow of quotes.


Oversee trial orders


Determine process routing for standard products




Assist in resolving customer claims


Develop new product applications.


Assist in determining and eliminating the root cause of nonconformance’s that are found at the division and/or with the customer.


Responsible for following department rules for safety, discipline, and work procedures within corporate management and quality guidelines.


Responsible for following the Cardinal Safety Rules.


Utilizing the Gerdau Business Systems and EMM concepts.


  Responsible for observing completing all required annual safety and environmental training (inc. fugitive dust).


  Responsible for spill prevention, containment, response and clean up or assist in clean up of material spills.


  Employee is expected to know, understand, and follow all applicable Federal, State, and Local environmental legal requirements and practices.
