You Have:

  • A four-year college degree in Engineering or Materials Science
  • 6-8 years of experience in Freight Management
  • A broad knowledge of the transportation industry. Incumbent must be familiar with all phases, procedures, and modes of finished steel product transportation, including management procedures, and techniques
  • Experience with contract negotiations for carrier services, brokerage contracts, claims resolution, and optionally fleet management
  • Solid presentation skills combined with exceptional interpersonal and organizational skills


Your Purpose:

The GLN Freight Transportation Manager is responsible for the management of finished goods truck carriers, shipment scheduling, and effective transportation programs with both reliability and cost effectiveness for GLN North America. You will be responsible for managing corporate programs such as the carrier commitment program (core carrier), Transportation Management System strategy, compliance programs, customer freight pricing, and SAP system reporting and management. The GLN Transportation Manager will provide strategic direction, development, and ongoing support for all field external logistics operations at all GLN Locations (US and Canada) via the external logistics facilitators and dispatchers.


Your Work:

  • Manage the Carrier Commitment Program to optimize rates, lanes, and provide continuous service throughout the year.
  • Identify and continuously onboard new carriers and negotiate rates and contracts for new and existing carriers to reduce risk and provide overall best price for strategic volume.
  • Lead new strategically aligned projects that may have no precedent such as new trucking businesses, dedicated programs, customs broker management, etc.
  • Manage the effective administration, enhancement, and rule changes related to all Transportation Management Systems (TMS), SAP, and other digital systems, and provide change management and training for all External Logistics Facilitators and dispatchers.
  • Develop business intelligence metrics to provide meaningful information to exact change initiatives, pro-actively identify issues, and support sales efforts.
  • Manage escalated carrier freight claims to include investigation and resolution of claims and service problems.
  • Develop and manage annual action plan which encompasses improvement items, budgets, employee training, employee opinion survey, and other annual projects that arise.
  • Manage career and succession process for External Logistics teams by identifying successors for all external logistics facilitators, provide continuous performance feedback, monitor engagement, suggest training, and recognize top performers based on meritocracy.
  • Support the development and provide guidance to logistics analysts who will maintain freight equalization rates, monitor market indexes, develop reports and presentations for management, upload rates to SAP, and manage carrier billing.
  • Keeping updated of developments in technology within the transportation industry and act as the liaison with vendors, customers, industry related organizations.
