Billet (Cab) Crane Operator

Operate overhead crane to lift and transfer billets from the caster to the billet storage yard, and from the billet storage yard to the reheating furnace at the rolling mill. Follow established material handling practices and procedures, combined with directives from floor personnel.

 

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

 

  1. Operate overhead crane to transfer billets from caster to billet storage yard.  
    1. Store billets according to grade, size, and heat number as determined by the Scheduling Department. 
    2. Transfer billets from billet storage to reheating furnace at rolling mill.
  2. Provide prompt attention and service to avoid delays.
  3. Use judgment to plan, perform, and make decisions regarding the sequence of material movement and the handling procedures that are required to service melt shop and the rolling mill in a timely and efficient manner. 
  4. Exercise extreme care in picking up and transporting loads, clearing obstacles, and properly positioning lifts in order to prevent production delays, damage, and/or injury to equipment and/or other employees.
  5. Detect indications of slipping or shifting loads, incorrect hitching, or faulty magnet operation.
  6. Load billets or billet scrap onto tractor-trailer, trucks, hoppers, and/or railcars.

 

Additional Responsibilities:

 

  1. Ensure that daily preventative maintenance is performed on vehicles and mobile equipment, which may include fueling, cleaning, and checking/adding fluids as needed.
  2. Follow all PPE requirements, as well as safety rules and guidelines, for all tasks being performed.
  3. Assist in training of coworkers as needed.
  4. Maintain communication with coworkers through two-way radio and hand signals.
  5. Demonstrate ability and willingness to work as part of a self-directed team with limited supervision. 
  6. Maintain work area and equipment in a clean and orderly condition.
  7. Exhibit engagement in GBS tools and methodology.
  8. Assist maintenance personnel as needed.
  9. Perform all other duties as assigned.

 

 

Education/Experience:

 

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Basic math and computer skills. 

 

1-3 years progressive crane experience is preferred. 

 

Physical Requirements:

 

  • Ability to climb stairs, climb ladders, reach, squat, tolerate prolonged standing/walking, balance, bend, operate mobile equipment, crawl, kneel, and push and pull objects.
  • Ability to reach, squat, and tolerate prolonged sitting.
  • Ability to lift up to 70 lbs.
  • Ability to operate hand controls with both hands and foot pedals with both feet.
  • Ability to perform sustained overhead reaching.
  • Ability to work in extreme ambient temperatures up to 160°F.
  • Ability to work in cramped quarters and at heights.
  • Ability to work a rotating shift schedule including days, nights, and weekends.
  • Ability to tolerate working in areas where noise levels can reach 120 decibels.
