Recycling Supervisor

 

 Overview
As a Recycling Supervisor, you’ll lead day-to-day operations within a dynamic scrap and recycling yard, ensuring materials are safely processed, accurately sorted, and delivered to meet customer and production requirements. This role is ideal for a hands-on leader who thrives in fast-paced industrial environments and is passionate about operational efficiency, safety, and team development.


 Key Responsibilities

  • Team Leadership & Supervision
    • Oversee and coordinate recycling yard personnel, ensuring safe and efficient material handling.
    • Train, coach, and audit operators against established procedures and performance standards.
    • Support hiring, performance evaluations, and disciplinary processes.
  • Operational Coordination
    • Manage the flow of scrap materials from receipt through sorting and shipment.
    • Coordinate inbound and outbound logistics via rail and truck in partnership with Sales and Purchasing teams.
    • Ensure timely delivery to internal and external customers while minimizing material downgrades.
  • Safety & Compliance
    • Champion a strong safety culture by enforcing procedures and conducting formal safety audits.
    • Develop and implement standard operating procedures focused on safe yard operations.
    • Ensure compliance with all company and regulatory safety standards.
  • Equipment & Maintenance
    • Oversee proper usage and maintenance of yard equipment to minimize downtime and damage.
    • Coordinate repairs and inspections, including locomotives and heavy machinery.
    • Troubleshoot equipment issues and drive timely resolution.
  • Inventory & Quality Control
    • Maintain accurate records of incoming and outgoing material weights.
    • Ensure proper classification and quality of scrap grades to support production requirements.
    • Monitor inventory flow for efficient yard organization and processing.
  • Stakeholder Collaboration
    • Work closely with customers, suppliers, and internal teams to meet operational goals.
    • Communicate effectively with Regional Managers and other yard locations.
    • Recommend process improvements and escalate operational issues as needed.

 Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree plus 2–3 years of relevant experience
    OR 5–7 years of progressive experience in recycling, scrap, or industrial operations
  • Strong knowledge of scrap metal grades and steel production requirements
  • Experience with rail/truck logistics and yard operations preferred
  • Proven leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills
  • Commitment to safety and continuous improvement
