Gerdau Special Steel North America is an engineered bar producer headquartered in Jackson, Michigan with world-class steel manufacturing mills in Jackson, Michigan, Monroe Michigan, and Fort Smith, Arkansas, and metal processing facilities in Huntington, Indiana.


This position will also be a part of a new program at Gerdau called GMAKERS. The GMakers group will be comprised of 30 employees in North America and the program is taught by Hyper Island.  It’s is a ground breaking nine-month program, where GMAKERS will solve one or more business challenges given to them by the North American executive committee. GMAKERS will participate in online training and three total face-to-face master classes, in which they will learn Agile methodology, rapid ideation, human tools, collaboration, self-leadership, intrapreneurship, learning from failure, lean start up methodology, and innovation. GMAKERS will collaborate in person and remotely and at the end of the nine months, GMAKERS will present their project results.


With engineered steel bar producing capabilities in North America, Europ and Brazil, the Gerdau Special Steel group is the largest supplier of SBQ engineered steel bars to the global automotive and heavy truck industries.




In this role, the Supply Planning Specialist will resolve projected supply/demand imbalances, aligning the Company’s Marketing, Sales, Production, Raw Materials and Logistics plans and identifying profit maximization opportunities. Responsible to provide effective information to support decision making, supporting collaborative planning processes with strategic partners to increase supply chain visibility and drive supply chain performance improvements.


The role is responsible for managing and administering the monthly demand and supply balancing process at three steel mills and downstream facilities.  Responsible for total production schedules at three steel mills and downstream facilities.  Working in close coordination with group sales, mill personnel, and customers, the incumbent develops and implements production schedules for all mill-rolled products with major emphasis on meeting customer demand while maximizing mill efficiency and minimizing corporate costs.  Moreover, the role is responsible for managing the Outside Processors process.




This position reports to the Supply Chain & Logistics Manager, and the primary purpose of this position is to manage the supply side of the Company’s Sales and Operations Planning (S&OP) process. 


The incumbent coordinates the implementation of dynamic and improved supply planning and demand/supply balancing processes, and execute continuous education processes to ensure broad organizational support and alignment behind the S&OP vision.  The incumbent  has  leadership in identifying profit maximization opportunities and providing effective information to support decision making that aligns the Company’s Sales, Marketing, Operations, Logistics plans; support collaborative planning processes with strategic partners to increase supply chain visibility; drive supply chain performance improvements; and participate in cross-functional teams to resolve projected supply/demand imbalances.  The incumbent provides analytical and technical leadership to improve the quality and timeliness of the S&OP data reporting, and will assist in constructing the business processes and systems to establish S&OP as a critical business nucleus.


This position performs diversified coordinating, scheduling, and production control duties necessary to maintain optimum production levels and inventory levels at all mill locations.  This function requires close coordination and cooperation with Plant General Manager, Sales, and Mill Production Control Managers in order to achieve desired results.


The incumbent develops individual specific rolling product plans for each of the three mills, detailing product, size, gauge, grade, length, tons, customer, and shipping information.  A major emphasis of the position is to level out unanticipated and unscheduled production delays at minimum additional cost or interruption to customer delivery schedules.


The duties of this position require considerable judgment to work independently toward results, making decisions guided by precedent and company policy.


Some outside contact is required with customers regarding scheduling and delivery may be required.  The position is responsible for managing the Outside Processors process.


This position requires, and broad knowledge of production planning and control.


Professional/Technical Knowledge:

  • Demonstrated understanding of the principles of supply chain management through a formal 4 year degree in Supply Chain Management or related disciplines; APICS or other professional development certification; and/or  prior 10 years work experience.
  • A minimum of 8 years Operations and/or Supply Chain Management experience, of which at least 3 years are in Supply Chain Planning, including exposure in S&OP.
  • Strong analytical and problem solving skills, translated into sound, tactical and strategic, business understanding.
  • Good project management, coaching and relationship building abilities applied to various levels of an organization, including the executive tiers.
  • Knowledge of steel mill and finishing operations and procedures preferred
  • Competence in using a variety of ERP (e.g. SAP/PLEX) and/or APS applications.
  • Intermediate skills in the use of Microsoft Excel, characterized as comfort with worksheet manipulation
  • Experience in sustaining business processes and supporting organizational change is desirable.
  • Experience managing professional resources.
  • Ability to interpret quantitative data and communicate results clearly and concisely
