BASIC FUNCTION:
The Technical Specialist is part of the Research and Development team. The individual will have expertise in a specific aspect of SBQ production including but not limited to melt & cast, rolling, finishing, testing or product. The individual is responsible for the planning, coordination, execution and monitoring of R&D projects. These projects will be part of a portfolio of projects designed to meet the strategic goals of the business division. The Technical Specialist provide support to the steel manufacturing operations and other functions within the organization. The individual is responsible for building strong relationships with other stakeholders, including but not limited to, other Gerdau business units, customers, academia and technical organizations.
DIMENSIONS:
The Technical Specialist reports directly to the Research and Development Manager. The individual will have no direct reports but will be required to work collaboratively with others within and outside the business unit.
NATURE AND SCOPE:
The Technical Specialist R&D will assist in the development of a portfolio of R&D projects that balance the short term and long term, product and process needs of the organization. The individual will be primarily responsible for the planning, coordination, execution and monitoring of individual R&D projects. The Technical Specialist shall set challenging goals that meet timelines and quality expectations. In doing so, the individual will need to work collaboratively with others, both from within and outside the organization. The individual is also responsible for continuously monitoring the external environment for technological innovations and best practices and for implementing the same within the organization.
QUALIFICATIONS and COMPETENCIES:
- Degree in Engineering preferably in Metallurgy or Material Science.
- Three (3) to Five (5) of relevant experience in the industry, preferably steel, with technical expertise in a specific aspect of SBQ production including but not limited to melt & cast, rolling, finishing, testing or product. Prior R&D or Steelmaking experience is a plus
- Strong analytical and problem solving skills using statistical techniques.
- Understand customer needs and show ability to create value for internal and external customers.
- Ability to work in teams, with the skills to achieve goals through influence. Experience of working in culturally diverse teams is a plus.
- Willingness and ability to travel and actively participate in projects at manufacturing locations.
- Must exhibit the culture, values and ethics of the Gerdau organization.
- The individual needs to possess a positive attitude, be flexible and have the ability to work well under pressure, being able to search for solutions beyond previously known paths.
PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES
- Follow safe practices and promote safety among members of the R&D team and the organization as a whole.
- Adopt and promote Gerdau values among members of the R&D team and the organization as a whole
- Assist in the development of a balanced portfolio of projects that supports the Strategic Business Plan (PEX) of the business unit.
- Adhere to project specific and departmental budgets.
- Support the execution of the prioritized projects using project management tools to ensure the expected returns, quality and the on-time completion of projects. Methodology and statistical tools should be used to ensure success of the project.
- Processing sample and data collection and interpretation. Willingness and ability to follow-up trials, testing and trial results on-site with schedule flexibility (24/7 shop).
- Provide technical support to the steel mills and other functions of the organization. Participate in and support Engineering teams in development of technical studies for Capex projects, process improvements and optimization. Support innovation within the organization and implement innovative solutions and improvements. Continuously monitor the external environment to identify technological, product and market trends. Disseminate this information to the organization.
- Interact with customers to resolve technical issues and to promote the technical capabilities of Gerdau
- Promote the establishment of relationships with Universities and other Technological Institutions, through participation in conferences, joint projects, student mentoring, etc.
- Support the team in promoting the technological capabilities of Gerdau, through the publication and presentation of technical papers and news and articles
