This position is responsible for providing effective professional health and safety support to improve the industrial health and safety of all employees. Will assist in the implementation of loss prevention and control efforts for the local Gerdau location.

 

This position is responsible for implementing and sustaining loss prevention and control systems, as they relate to health and safety, and providing technical support for improvement efforts. The Safety Specialist will assist management with the development of a safety management system aimed at preventing and controlling losses.

 

Under general direction, assist with the development, identification and implementation of management tools to support the safety management system that is congruent with performance expectations. Assist with the development and implementation of a communication plan for health and safety issues, including implementing and coordinating all safety training programs at the location. This position has no direct reports, but acts in an advisory capacity and provides coaching and guidance for other Safety Specialists, as well as other employees throughout the location.

 

The incumbent will support the Gerdau Business System (GBS) as it relates to health and safety, by conducting analysis and audits of the safety management system, and report performance of the program by using Key Performance Indicators (KPIs). The primary focus of the position will be to oversee, facilitate, and continuously improve the safety management system for the location.

 

The incumbent actively participates in accident prevention activities to include inspections, observations, and incident investigations. The Safety Specialist will coordinate, direct, and oversee safety compliance and remediation efforts. This position acts in an advisory capacity to management and serves as a liaison with governmental agencies.

 

The incumbent should possess a bachelor’s degree in safety, industrial hygiene, engineering, or other appropriate technical discipline and 2 to 5 years’ safety experience (manufacturing environment preferred). This position requires the ability to solve problems, influence, and communicate ideas to effect change in behaviors. Excellent communication skills and working knowledge of Microsoft Office applications are required. Responsible for staying abreast of new technologies and current trends to make recommendations that help improve and refine the safety process.

3. Identify and report performance measurements to evaluate the effectiveness of the safety management system.

 

4. Assist with the development and implementation of a communication system to communicate health and safety issues throughout the organization.

 

5. Implement, coordinate, and direct safety training programs at the location.

 

6. Oversee routine management practices for health and safety programs.

 

7. Coordinate, direct, and oversee safety compliance and remediation efforts.

 

8. Possess excellent communication skills, to including working knowledge of Microsoft Office applications.

 

9. Stay abreast of new technologies and current trends to make recommendations that help improve and refine the safety process.

 

10. Assist in the development and management of the annual action plan.
