 Location: Guelph  Gerdau

 

Join Our Team as a Yard Operator

 

Gerdau is seeking a motivated and safety-focused Yard Operator to support our daily yard operations. This hands-on role is critical to the success of our scrap processing and recycling operations and offers an opportunity to build valuable skills in equipment operation, material inspection, and scrap grading.

What You'll Do

 

As a Yard Operator, you will:

  • Follow all Gerdau safety, environmental, and operational procedures.
  • Inspect incoming scrap materials to ensure they meet quality and environmental standards.
  • Identify and communicate scrap grades, deductions, and downgrades.
  • Scan all incoming materials for radiation and follow quarantine procedures when required.
  • Safely operate loaders and material handling equipment to load and unload materials.
  • Ensure outbound materials meet customer specifications and quality standards.
  • Perform and document daily equipment inspections and routine equipment care.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment.
  • Provide exceptional customer service to suppliers and customers.
  • Participate in daily safety meetings and activities.

 

Additional Responsibilities

 

Depending on location and business needs, you may also:

  • Assist with inventory counts.
  • Support equipment maintenance and repairs.
  • Operate baling equipment.
  • Assist with non-ferrous material processing, including copper, brass, and aluminum.
  • Support yard operations to improve safety, efficiency, and profitability.
  • Stage and move materials using a material handler.
  • Contribute ideas and solutions for continuous improvement.

 

Locations with Rail Operations

 

In facilities with rail service, responsibilities may include:

  • Operating yard locomotives.
  • Coupling and uncoupling rail cars.
  • Activating rail switches.
  • Setting brakes and wheel blocks.
  • Moving loaded and empty rail cars in accordance with operating procedures.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or equivalent preferred.
  • Previous experience in scrap, recycling, industrial, construction, manufacturing, or heavy equipment operations is an asset but not required.
  • Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions.
  • Ability to perform physically demanding work in an industrial environment.

Job Type: Full-time
Salary:  $27.26 per hour
Ability to commute/relocate: - Guelph, ON -  reliably commute or plan to relocate before starting work (required)
