BASIC FUNCTION:

 

To manage the division’s accounting function and plant accounting staff to ensure proper reporting of financial, statistical, and management information in accordance with the company’s accounting policies.

 

NATURE AND SCOPE:

 

This position reports directly to the Mill Controller.

 

The position directly supervises four Accounting Clerks.

 

The qualifications for this position are five to ten years of progressive accounting responsibilities in a manufacturing organization, preferably in a plant environment.  Proficiency in personal computer software and accounting systems and excellent communication skills are required.  Proven experience in managing accounting functions is desired.  The successful candidate must possess a Bachelor's Degree with a major in Accounting.

 

The Senior Mill Accountant will manage the daily processing of payables, weekly processing of payroll, and the monthly closing process.  They will work closely with the Mill Controller to document accounting practices, inventory control and perform cost analysis.  They will be responsible for all accounting functions related to inventories and inventory control, coding payables, and processing invoices for payment and payroll and production records.  The Senior Mill Accountant is responsible for maintaining the integrity of the division’s balance sheet accounts through review and audit of general ledger accounts balances and account activity.  The position will assist the Mill Controller in the preparation of quarterly forecasts, annual budgets, and action plans and in maintaining software systems in use by the company.

 

PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES:

 

             Supervise the plant accounting staff in their performance of routine accounting tasks.

  • Establish procedures for general ledger account reconciliations/account analysis.
  • Review general ledger account activity as part of internal control procedures.
  • Review general ledger reconciliations/account analysis done by accounting staff.
  • Oversee inventory accounting for the plant using various corporate systems.
  • Oversee accounts payable function for the plant.
  • Review accounts payable for proper approvals and account codes.
  • Maintain operating statistics – production rates, yields, cost/ton, usage, man-hours, etc. and analysis of trends.
  • Maintain a high level of staff proficiency with training, coaching, and personal development.
  • Develop and maintain proficiency in financial systems software for the purpose of being the principal resource for training and development of both new employees and the continued improvement/development of current employees.

 

Manage the monthly closing of the plant financial systems in accordance with the corporate closing process

  • Coordinate, schedule, and manage the monthly closing process.
  • Coordinate and review all entries to the general ledger.
  • Review and maintain all changes to standard accruals.
  • Maintain allocation of journal entries.
  • Act as liaison between plant accounting, plant operating departments, and corporate accounting during the closing process.
  • Maintain fixed asset records coordinating with the corporate tax department.  Track and account for capital projects (CIP); assure accurate reporting and classification; assure timely closing of CIP projects to fixed assets; Coordinate with plant engineer in preparation of comparisons to the capital budget and analysis of cost overruns.

 

Assist the Plant Controller.

  • Maintain accurate and timely accounting transactions, records, and reports in close coordination with the plant controller.
  • Assist Plant Controller in preparing monthly reporting to division management on production and process costs.  Work with the division management team (General Manager, Superintendents, Controller, etc.) in cost analysis, what-if analysis, etc. to analyze and reduce production costs.
  • Assist Plant Controller in preparing the division’s annual business plan and budget and the division’s rolling forecast,
  • Assist Plant Controller in office management – equipment purchases and maintenance, office supplies, vendor relationships, etc.
  • Assist Plant Controller in the identification, documentation, and implementation of internal controls sufficient to comply with all requirements of Sarbanes-Oxley legislation.

 

The incumbent must perform the above-mentioned duties and responsibilities in accordance with all Federal, State, and Local environmental regulations.  Employees must also report any situation which may have a detrimental impact on human health or the environment to their immediate supervisor.
