Gerdau Special Steel North America is an engineered bar producer headquartered in Jackson, Michigan with world-class steel manufacturing mills in Jackson, Michigan, Monroe Michigan, and Fort Smith, Arkansas, and a metal processing facility in Huntington, Indiana.

 

With engineered steel bar producing capabilities in North America and Brazil, the Gerdau Special Steel group is one of the largest supplier of SBQ engineered steel bars to the global automotive and heavy truck industries.

 

The Process Engineer provides technical coordination and support in the steel making processes by overseeing the process, practice and equipment monitoring, stabilization, and improvements through;

  • Developing and refining operating procedures.
  • Processing sample and data collection and interpretation.
  • Implementation of new technology.
  • Technical training and development of operations personnel.
  • Supporting process improvement and optimization.
  • Technical Studies to support CAPEX investments.
  • Implementing Best Practices.
  • Developing and executing Annual Action Plans.
  • Participating in Technical Committees and benchmarking.

 

This position serves as a corporate resource providing advisory or consulting capacity, serves as a coach to all levels of employees, contractors, and plant management.  This position is primarily responsible for developing, refining, and communicating the strategies and operating information needed to optimize productivity while ensuring the efficient and cost-effective production of the final product.

 

PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES:

  • Work individually and in teams on the process, practice, and equipment-related projects at their assigned location.
  • Collect, correlate and report operational information and data for their assigned location.
  • Prepare datasheets, diagrams, and flow charts for correct and efficient operation of the equipment.
  • Provide preliminary engineering services for department projects and cost justification.
  • Assist with preparing programs for the computer control systems.
  • Review, develop, and improve operating procedures and train plant personnel and contractors in operational improvements.
  • Coordinate with supervision during routine operations, and assist in solving production anomalies in the operations process.
  • Assist with and participate in the process team-building efforts through participation in improvement activities.
  • Participate in the training and development of operational supervision and hourly employees.
  • Attend required training courses for technical and career development and actively participate in the Knowledge Management Community.

 

Qualifications for this position include a four-year college degree in Engineering or a related field combined with 3 to 5 years of industrial experience.  The successful candidate must be able to apply engineering fundamentals to the continuous improvement efforts of production and maximize the efficiency of the overall department operation.
