JOB DESCRIPTION:

 

Oversee the activities of the Recycling yard personnel and coordinate multiple tasks for the purpose of collecting & sorting scrap into various grades, and coordinating with Sales & Purchasing the transfer of sorted material to customers (internal & external).  The basic function of this position is to ensure that operating personnel perform their duties in order to fulfill the requirements of their job duties pertaining to the Recycling yard operations in a safe and timely manner. 

 

 

NATURE AND SCOPE:

 

This position reports to the Division Manager, and is responsible for overseeing the activities of movement of scrap through out the operation, as well as training, testing and auditing of the Recycling Yard Operators.

 

The Supervisor will assist in the development of standard operating procedures used by Recycling personnel to fulfill their position duties.  The majority of the standards developed will be safely moving traffic and products throughout the Yard.  The Recycling Supervisor is responsible for training, tI caesting and auditing, Yard personnel against established procedures.

 

The incumbent should have a working knowledge of scrap and metal grades and must know the different types of steel scrap that is charged into the furnace and the quality requirements in order to make quality finished products.  The Recycling Supervisor will be responsible to ensure the proper recording of weight of incoming scrap and outgoing finished product to ensure proper acknowledgement of receivables as well as shipments for proper payment.  Qualifications for this position would include a four-year degree plus 2 - 3 years related work experience, or 5 - 7 years of related work experience in equal or lesser jobs is acceptable.

 

The Recycling Supervisor is responsible for coordinating with the Sales & Purchasing department to ensure that customers receive scrap in accordance with their desired delivery dates.  The incumbent orders incoming scrap via rail and truck  and coordinates the staging of empty rail cars and trucks to be loaded with finished product, or sets railcars out to be picked up by the railroad.  The incumbent’s objective is to organize the collection of scrap metal, supervise the process of sorting scrap metal and stage the delivery of steel to the customers on time and minimize downgardes.   

 

The Recycling Yard Supervisor will work with a variety of outside sources and must be able to interact with other Recycling Yard location personnel, Regional Managers, Customers and Scrap Suppliers..  Good communication skills are a necessity to interface with customers, scrap suppliers and personnel.  The Recycling Yard Supervisor will make recommendations for policy changes and will inform the Division Manager of any issues that may arise.

 

The Recycling Yard Supervisor is responsible for assisting in the selection and recruiting of scrap yard personnel as well as the periodic review and evaluation of these employees.  This position is also responsible for assisting with the communication of wages and conducting any disciplinary action that must be taken with subordinates.

 

The Recycling Yard Supervisor is responsible for the timely repair of  equipment that belongs to Gerdau Recycling and the scheduling of locomotive inspections with the lease company.  The incumbent will investigate all equipment repairs and will seek to resolve problems as they arise.

 

The RecyclingYard Supervisor is responsible for the safety of his subordinate personnel.  Formal safety audits will be conducted and the results will be reported to the Division Manager.  As needed the Recycling Yard Supervisor fill in forScrap Yard Operators.

 

 

 

PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES:

 

  1. Supervise scrap yard personnel for the proper placement of scrap cars and trucks within the Yard safely.

 

  1. Responsible for the organization of incoming and outgoing scrap.

 

  1. Responsible for the diagnosis and subsequent solution of equipment breakdown problems.

 

  1. Responsible for proper operation and utilization of equipment to prevent damage and minimize repair.

 

  1. Responsible for initiating, writing, training and auditing personnel on procedures for the Scrap Yard.

 

  1. Responsible for the scheduling of personnel, work hours reported by the people, and documentation of any oral or written disciplinary action required.

 

  1. Coordinates with Traffic, and Sales & Purchasing Department to coordinate the timely loading/unloading  trucks.  In addition, duties may include scheduling overtime to work additional hours to unload customers with scrap. 

 

  1. Responsible for working with the scrap inspector for the proper inspection of incoming scrap by  truck.  The final decision of either accepting or rejecting incoming scrap will be made.

 

  1. Responsible for leading team activities to accomplish improvement goals including facilitating crew meetings.

 

  1. Responsible for Departmental housekeeping.

 

  1. Fill in Yard Opaertor personnel in case of in emergencies.

 

  1. Perform other duties as assigned by immediate supervisor.

 

The incumbent must perform the above mentioned duties and responsibilities in accordance with all Federal, State, and Local environmental regulations.  Employees must also report any situation which may have a detrimental impact to human health or the environment to their immediate supervisor.
