Plan, lay out, and perform the sequence of loading, unloading, weighing, and positioning to furnish internal and external customers with scrap metal. Must have knowledge of scrap grades and quality and melting sequence to provide proper scrap mix to melt shop operations.  Work from lists, weigh bills, etc., following instructions and recognized or standard operating methods and procedures.  Coordinate activities with other Yard Operators and Scale Operator.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Work involves a variety of tasks, simple through moderately complex in nature, requiring some care to ensure correct procedures are being followed.
  • Ensure that all incoming scrap is scanned for radiation and that all material that fails the scan is quarantined and the appropriate personnel are notified.
  • Operate the loader and/or the crane to assist in loading and unloading oversize scrap or crushed cars from trucks.
  • Take corrective actions and report when yard and building scrap inventory become out of balance with respect to established procedures.
  • Inspect and verify scrap for grade and quality. Identify deductions and downgrades.
  • Record and report all discrepancies via written reports.
  • Monitor scrap supply in yard; coordinate activities to ensure melt shop requirements are met.
  • Prepare scrap tickets for all product received. Record information required in accordance with standard operating procedures.
  • Perform daily preventative maintenance checks on machinery; this includes greasing, checking oil and fluids and minor repairs to machines as required.

Minimum Requirements:

  • High School Diploma or GED is preferred but not required.
  • 2+ years of relevant experience preferred. Any mechanical/industrial/manufacturing type of experience is highly preferred.
  • Ability to operate heavy mobile equipment (i.e. forklift, bobcat, man lift, cranes, etc.) would be preferred.
  • A team player is critical; report to work on time; be productive; adaptable and flexible; presentable, customer service oriented, previous experience working in a warehouse and/or outside is preferred; work OT as needed.
