Primary Responsibilities:

  • Interpret drawings and sketches. Plan details of working procedure, tools and materials required.
  • Select materials in accordance with suitability for job.
  • Lay out work, make sketches and determine stock size as required.
  • Perform all rigging as necessary.
  • Clean and prepare surfaces to be welded as required. Set up, assemble, and take weld parts constructing special fixtures as needed. Perform gas and electric welding in all positions (down-hand, vertical, overhead, etc.) Mark any type and size weld, such as "V", lay butt, etc. preheating parts when required.
  • Build up work or defective surfaces. Clean, grind and flame anneal parts and welded joints as required. Use burning equipment to dismantle assemblies and to cut material to size and shape. Perform brazing as required. May perform thermi-welding or shielded arc welding as required.
  • Perform work requiring a working knowledge of the welding properties of vaious types of metals, welding rods, welding heats, stress relief, allowance for fit-up and machining, and the effects of shrinkage, warpage and expansion.
  • Perform welding on pipes that must withstand high pressure.
  • Complete necessary reports and work with repair crews as directed.
  • Document all work performed on Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS). 
  • All other tasks assigned by management.


Secondary Responsibilites:

  • Exercise all safety precautions and makes provisions for handling materials and equipment to and from job site. Works in shop of job site.
  • Observes good housekeeping and safety on the jobsite and maintenance shop.
  • Utilization of EMM.



  • 1 year welding experience with Welder Journeyman’s Card or
  • 6 years welding experience without Journeyman's Card 
  • and
  • High school diploma or GED
  • and
  • Pass all testing requirements


Quality Related Responsibilities: 

  • Employee will follow current quality policies and practices to strive for zero defects and continuous improvements.


Safty Related Responsibilities:

  • Must lock out all equipment prior to repairing it.
  • Must perform all repairs following Gerdau Safety Policies.
  • Observe and follow all departmental safety rules and regulations including the Cardinal Safety Rules.


Cost/Production Related Responsibilities:

  • All equipment must be maintained to minimize plant down time.


Environmental Related Responsibilites:

  • Employee is expected to know, understand, and follow all applicable Federal, State, and Local environmental legal requirements and practices.
  • Responsible for and completing all required annual safety and environmental training (inc. fugitive dust).
  • Responsible for spill prevention, containment, response and clean up or assist in cleanup of material spills.    
  • Tasks which have significant environmental impacts are (i.e. process pond water, spill prevention, KO61 dust (bag house dust) PM’s and calibration of equipment).
